New No Smoking Notice Required for Rhode Island Businesses

The Rhode Island Department of Health has updated the state’s No Smoking notice to match new requirements in the law. Employers are required to post the new notice in their places of business.

Our updated Rhode Island State Poster will soon be on its way to our customers in The Ocean State.

Need-to-Know Info for Employers and Employees

Vaping Is Prohibited

The No Smoking notice now includes information on vaping. In addition to smoking, it is illegal to engage in vaping in Rhode Island establishments. The law prohibits the use of combustible tobacco products and other similar products such as electronic cigarettes (a.k.a. e-cigarettes).

Rhode Island’s Public Health and Workplace Safety Act defines the term e-cigarette as an electronic nicotine-delivery system that “may be used to simulate smoking in the delivery of nicotine or other substances to a person inhaling from the device.” Nicotine-delivery systems include, but are not limited to, electronic cigars, cigarillos, pipes, hookahs, and related electronic devices, cartridges, or other components.

Posting Requirements

In addition to the required No Smoking notice provided on our Rhode Island State Poster, certain employers may need to obtain No Smoking signs particular to their industry. For more information, employers may contact the Rhode Island Department of Health at (401) 222-3293, or go to the following website: https://www.health.ri.gov/healthrisks/tobacco/about/secondhandsmoke/
