Ohio’s 2018 Minimum Wage Notice Just Released

Effective January 1, 2018, the minimum wage in Ohio is going up, based on an annual increase for inflation. The updated minimum wage notice, provided by the state’s Department of Commerce, has a new revision date of September 30, 2017.

New Minimum Wage Rates for 2018

Non-Tipped Employees

Ohio’s minimum wage for non-tipped employees will increase from $8.15 per hour to $8.30 per hour.

However, employers who gross less than $305,000 (previously $299,000) are required to pay their employees no less than the current federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.

Tipped Employees

The minimum wage for tipped employees will increase from $4.08 per hour to $4.15, plus tips.

Tipped employees are defined as those “who engage in an occupation in which they customarily and regularly receive more than 30 dollars in tips.”

Overtime

Employers are required to pay overtime at one and one-half times an employee’s wage rate for any hours worked above 40 in one work week. Employers who gross less than $150,000 per year are exempt from paying overtime.

Individuals Who Are Exempt From the Minimum Wage

Certain individuals are exempt from receiving the minimum wage. These include U.S. government employees, baby-sitters or live-in companions hired to work in an employer’s home, outside sales people who receive commissions, and employees who work with children under the age of 18 at recreational camps owned by non-profit organizations.
