Pittsburgh Releases New Paid Sick Leave Posters

Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania has released two required notices ahead of the January 11, 2016 effective date of the Paid Sick Time law.

Clarifying the Details

Pittsburgh’s Sick Time ordinance was not very clear on what to expect as far as notification requirements for the City’s new law, but they have now made the posting requirements much more obvious. Instead of the traditional single required notice, there are two posters required under the law.

The first, titled Pittsburgh Paid Sick Time, is a comprehensive overview of the law. It highlights that most full and part-time employees are covered, with the exception of state and federal employees, private contractors, construction workers  covered under union bargaining, and some seasonal workers.

Employees accrue 1 hour of paid sick time for every 35 hours worked. Rate of accrual varies depending on how many employees an employer has. If an employer has more than 15 employees, than those employees may accrue up to 40 hours of paid sick time in a year. If an employer has less than 15 employees, than those employees may accrue up to 24 hours of paid sick time in a year.

The second required notice is titled Notice to Employees, and serves as a condensed summary of the law as well as a reminder that employees should report if they are not receiving paid sick time. This notice gives more thorough information about where an employee may report in order to have the City investigate a workplace.

Stay Covered No Matter What

City required notices, although a recent trend, are popping up left and right. Not only are cities with current laws often considering more, but new cities, like Pittsburgh, are adding mandatory labor law postings as well.
