Q&A: Federal OSHA & GHS (Globally Harmonized System)

Q:   Does the Globally Harmonized System (for OSHA) mean that the federal poster is changing or there will be a whole new labor law poster?

A:   Federal OSHA revised its Hazard Communication Standard to align with the United Nations’ Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). Specific requirements will be phased in over several years.

The revised standard requires new labels, a standardized format for Safety Data Sheets and training for workers, but there is no poster requirement and it will not change the federal OSHA poster.
