Seattle WA Creates Minimum Wage Poster; New Seattle Labor Law Poster Required

Employers in Seattle, Washington are now required to post a new city Minimum Wage poster.

This new labor law poster outlines that the minimum wage will increase to $11.00 an hour as of April 1, 2015, for large (501 or more employees) employers, and for small (500 or fewer employees) employers that contribute towards employee medical benefits or offer tips. If an employer does not make payments towards medical payments or an employee is not tipped, then the wage for small employers is $10.00 effective April 1, 2015.

On January 1, 2016, the wage amounts diverge for large and small employers. For large employers, the wage will be $13.00 effective January 1, 2016, and $15.00 effective January 1, 2017. If a large employer contributes to an employee’s medical benefits, then the wage will be $12.50 effective January 1, 2016, $13.50 effective January 1, 2017, and $15.00 effective January 1, 2018.

For small employers, the wage reaches $12.00 effective January 1, 2016, $13.00 effective January 1, 2017, $14.00 effective January 1, 2018, and $15.00 effective January 1, 2019. If a small employer contributes to an employee’s medical benefits or if an employee is tipped, the wage will be $10.00 effective April 1, 2015, $10.50 effective January 1, 2016, $11.00 effective January 1, 2017, $12.00 effective January 1, 2018, and $12.50 effective January 1, 2019.

There is an additional section on the poster that is dedicated to wage theft. This section outlines in detail that wage theft occurs when an employee does not receive full payment for work performed and includes a list of payment issues that are considered wage theft. Also, there is a list of information that employers must provide in written form to their employees.

Lastly, the poster specifies the reasons why an employee can file a complaint and gives contact information.

The  city has already issued the Seattle WA Minimum Wage poster  in English.  However, it is also required for all employers in Spanish and the responsible city agency says the mandatory Spanish translation will be issued shortly.
