We recently reported that New Jersey’s minimum wage will be going up on January 1, 2018, based on an annual adjustment based on inflation. The state’s Department of Labor and Workforce Development has issued the updated Wage and Hour Law Abstract, which has a revision date of 1/18.
Employers should be aware that two other notices on the poster have been updated: Discrimination in Places of Public Accommodation and Discrimination in Housing. Details of the changes are outlined below.
Wage and Hour Law Notice
Minimum Wage Rate
The minimum wage rate in New Jersey increases to $8.60 per hour, effective January 1, 2018.
Exemptions to the Minimum Wage
As outlined in our previous blog, employees who are exempt from New Jersey’s minimum wage include full-time students who are employed by the college/university at which they are enrolled (at not less than 85% of the minimum wage), outside salespeople, part-time employees who care for children in an employer’s home, and some minors under the age of 18.
Discrimination in Places of Public Accommodation & Discrimination in Housing Notices
New Discrimination Category
New Jersey’s Division on Civil Rights has updated both notices to include a discrimination category that was recently added to the state’s Law Against Discrimination.
Both notices now state that discrimination is prohibited on the basis of liability for service in the U.S. Armed Forces. The notices have a revision date of 11/2/17.
