ABOUT THE NEW MINIMUM WAGE RATE

The new wage increase is for all adult and minor employees working 2 or more hours per week in Belmont, not including tips. This requirement applies to employers who are subject to the Belmont Business License Tax or who maintain a facility in Belmont.

 

FUTURE MINIMUM WAGE RATES

On January 1, 2021, Belmont’s minimum wage will increase to $15.90. Thereafter, the city’s minimum wage will be adjusted annually based on the Regional Consumer Price Index.

 

EMPLOYEE PROTECTIONS UNDER THE MINIMUM WAGE ORDINANCE

Employees who assert their rights to receive the City of Belmont’s minimum wage are protected from retaliation under the city’s Minimum Wage Ordinance. For any violation of the ordinance, employees have the right to file a civil lawsuit against an employer, or they may file a complaint with the City of Belmont.

The city will require access to payroll records in order to investigate possible violations. The city is responsible for enforcing violations of the Minimum Wage Ordinance by ordering reinstatement of employees and payment of back wages withheld illegally, plus penalties.

Those who believe they are not being paid the correct wages should contact their employer or the Office of Equality Assurance (OES). The Minimum Wage notice includes full contact information for the OES.
