Paid Sick Leave Coming Soon to Dallas, Texas

The City of Dallas has released a Paid Sick Leave (PSL) notice in both English and Spanish, outlining details of the new ordinance. Employers should make sure they are prepared prior to the August 1, 2019 effective date.

Details of the PSL Ordinance

Accrual of Paid Sick Leave

As of August 1, 2019:

  • Employers with 16 or more employees in the past 12 months must provide 1 hour of PSL for every 30 hours worked, with a minimum accrual limit and carryover of unused leave of 64 hours.
  • Employers with 15 or fewer employees in the past 12 months must provide 1 hour of PSL for every 30 hours worked, with a minimum accrual limit and carryover of unused leave of 48 hours.

As of August 1, 2021:

  • Employers with 5 or fewer employees in the past 12 months must provide 1 hour of PSL for every 30 hours worked, with a minimum accrual limit and carryover of unused leave of 48 hours.

Employers may offer a more generous Paid Sick Leave policy that provides additional rates of accrual.

Uses of Paid Sick Leave

Paid sick leave may be used for an employee’s own or a family member’s illness, injury, and healthcare, as well as matters related to domestic abuse, sexual assault, or stalking.
