The Fair Labor Standards Act sets a federal minimum wage to protect workers from unreasonably low wages and provide a minimum standard of living. Many states, including Arizona, have also enacted their own minimum wage laws to establish a compensation baseline.

Arizona employers must place minimum wage posters in a conspicuous location within their workplaces to comply with the law and avoid fines and penalties. Poster Compliance Center can provide high-quality, state-specific posters that meet your organization’s needs.

What Is Arizona’s Minimum Wage Overview?

Arizona’s minimum wage is much higher than the federal wage. As of January 1, 2024, the state’s minimum wage is $14.35, compared to $7.25 per hour at the federal level. The Arizona Industrial Commission, the entity responsible for setting and enforcing the minimum wage, typically reviews the rate annually and adjusts it as needed to account for factors such as inflation and increased cost of living.

Industry Variations and Exemptions

The minimum wage in Arizona applies to most of the state’s employers and workers, with these exceptions:

  • Tipped workers: As of 2024, the minimum wage for bartenders, servers and other workers who earn much of their income via tips is $12.35 per hour, as their total earnings will likely exceed the baseline rate.
  • Farm workers: With the exception of certain Arizona counties, the state’s agriculture workers are exempt from the minimum wage requirement.
  • Construction: Employers engaged in public works projects must pay their workers a predetermined, industry-specific wage rate.
  • Nonprofits: These organizations are exempt from minimum wage laws under the Fair Labor Standards Act. However, many larger nonprofits elect to pay their workers at least the standard rate for ethical reasons.
  • Home health care: Workers who deliver residential health care services in Arizona are exempt from federal and Arizona minimum wage laws. The state’s Medicaid agency establishes the minimum reimbursement rates for these services.
