Effective January 1, 2020, employees in the City of Albuquerque, New Mexico, must be paid increased minimum wage and tipped wage rates. This annual adjustment is based on an increase, if any, in the prior calendar year’s Consumer Price Index for urban wage earners and clerical workers in the Western Region.
The new minimum wage rates for 2020 are outlined below.
2020 Minimum Wage Adjustment
Beginning January 1, 2020, the minimum wage increases to:
- $9.35 per hour
- $8.35 per hour for employees whose employer provides them with healthcare and/or childcare benefits during any pay period—and pays an amount for those benefits that are equal to or exceeds an annualized cost of $2,500
- $5.60 per hour for tipped employees, which is 60% of the full minimum wage
Enforcement of the Minimum Wage
Employees who believe they have not been paid the correct minimum wage may report an allegation of noncompliance by calling the City of Albuquerque’s Legal Department at (505) 768-4500. Any employee who is worried about retaliation or termination due to reporting an allegation may make a request to proceed anonymously, but this request must be made at the beginning of the process.
For additional information on this topic, employers and employees may go to the Rule Regarding Enforcement of the Albuquerque Minimum Wage Ordinance web page.
