Due to the approval of Initiative 1433 in the November 2016 election, there are changes coming for employees in the State of Washington. The minimum wage rate will increase as of January 1, 2017, and rates have been determined through January 1, 2020. In addition, new paid sick leave provisions will take effect on January 1, 2018.
New Minimum Wage Rate for 2017
Effective January 1, 2017, Washington’s minimum wage will increase to $11.00 an hour.
Future Minimum Wage Changes
On January 1, 2018, the minimum wage will increase to $11.50 per hour, on January 1, 2019, it will increase to $12.00 per hour, and on January 1, 2020, it will jump to $13.50 per hour, with annual adjustments thereafter for inflation.
New Paid Sick Leave Provisions
Beginning January 1, 2018, employees will be able to accrue 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 40 hours worked.
