Michigan Updates Two Labor Law Notices—New Poster Required

Due to updates to the Michigan Unemployment Compensation and Youth Employment workplace notices, our customers in the Great Lakes State will need a new state poster.

What’s Changing for Unemployment Compensation?

The changes to the Unemployment Compensation notice, which has a revision date of 5/18, include an update to the process for filing claims on the Internet and all-new information for filing claims by telephone.

Filing Unemployment Claims Via the Internet

To file unemployment insurance (UI) claims on the Internet, employees who have a MiWAM account can now select the “Michigan Web Account Manager for Claimants and Employers” link and then select the “File a claim” link under the filing options. However, the requirements for filing claims online have not changed. To be eligible, claimants must still have worked under only one Social Security number, and they must not have filed a claim for UI benefits against another state within the past 12 months.

Filing Unemployment Claims Via Telephone

The updated notice provides much simpler instructions for filing UI claims by telephone. Those filing for benefits no longer have to figure out which days and hours to call based on the last two digits of their Social Security number. Now, claimants can simply call MARVIN at 1-866-638-3993 Monday through Saturday, between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

Who’s MARVIN, you ask? MARVIN is an acronym for Michigan’s Automated Response Voice Interactive Network, a system that enables callers to communicate using a touch-tone or push-button telephone with a tone/pulse switch. Using digitized human speech, MARVIN can provide step-by-step instructions related to a UI claim. Plus, MARVIN works every holiday, can handle up to 800 phone calls at a time, gives fast and accurate information, and can even refer claimants to someone who can help. What a guy!

What’s Changing for Youth Employment?

The Michigan Department of Education has added an additional discrimination category to the Youth Employment notice. Discrimination is now prohibited based on gender, in addition to race, color, religion, national origin or ancestry, age, sex, height, weight, marital status, or disability.

That’s All for the State of Michigan

For now, there are no updates to the remaining notices on our Michigan poster: Minimum Wage & Overtime, Safety & Health (MIOSHA), Discrimination, Whistleblowers’ Protection Act, Safety Data Sheets (Right to Know), and New or Revised Safety Data Sheets. If anything changes, our Michigan customers will be alerted.
