On July 1, 2019, all businesses or non-profits in the City of San Leandro are subject to a minimum wage increase, regardless of the number of employees.
San Leandro’s City Council passed a Minimum Wage Ordinance in September 2016, requiring stepped increases to $15.00 over a 4-year period beginning July 1, 2017. The San Leandro Minimum Wage notice features wage rates through July 1, 2020.
New and Future Minimum Wage Rates
Effective July 1, 2019, employers in San Leandro must pay their employees a minimum wage rate of $14.00 per hour. On July 1, 2020, the city’s minimum wage will increase once more to $15.00 per hour.
Protections for Employees
Employees who feel they have not been paid the correct minimum wage are encouraged to contact their employer. Under San Leandro’s Minimum Wage Ordinance, employees who assert their rights to receive the city’s minimum wage are protected from retaliation by their employers.
Employees who believe they have been subject to retaliation may:
- File a civil lawsuit against their employer for any violation of the ordinance OR
- File a complaint with the city’s Department of Finance
The city is responsible for investigating suspected violations, reinstating employees, paying back wages unlawfully withheld, and imposing penalties on employers who are in violation of the ordinance.
