There has been some confusion about the labor law posting requirements for employers in Los Angeles County. Employers are having difficulty determining if their businesses are in an incorporated city or unincorporated area of the county. Furthermore, some employers are unsure if the Los Angeles County labor laws apply to their businesses.
Posting Requirements for Los Angeles County
The Los Angeles County labor law notices are only required for businesses in UNINCORPORATED Los Angeles County. Los Angeles County businesses that are located in an incorporated city are NOT required to post the Los Angeles County labor law notices.
Posting Requirements for the City of Los Angeles
Businesses that operate in the City of Los Angeles are required to post mandatory labor law notices issued by the city. The entire City of Los Angeles is an incorporated area of Los Angeles County—therefore, businesses within the city DO NOT need the Los Angeles County poster.
Since some businesses list their address with a neighborhood name instead of a city name, it’s important for them to determine if the neighborhood is in the City of Los Angeles. For example, if a business lists its address in Northridge, CA, the business is part of the City of Los Angeles and must post the city labor law notices.
Need Help Determining Your City or County Posting Requirements?
The county’s website provides a tool called Z-NET that allows employers to enter their business address and determine if the location is in an unincorporated or incorporated area of Los Angeles County. The search results listed below help to determine which posters are required (if any).
- If the search results appear as a Parcel Profile with a Zoning Code or Land Use message, the address is in unincorporated Los Angeles County and the Los Angeles County poster is required.
- If the search results state “Not Within Unincorporated Los Angeles County – This address is in the City of Los Angeles,” the Los Angeles city poster is required (but not the county poster).
- If the search results state “Not Within Unincorporated Los Angeles County – This address is in the City of __________,” the Los Angeles County poster is not required. If the specified city has its own posting requirement, employers must post the city’s notice(s).
